How to become a tarot reader: from reading for yourself to reading for others

A four-stage path to becoming a tarot reader: what to practice first, how to read for a friend, handle follow-up questions, and the ethics every reader needs.

Becoming a tarot reader does not mean opening a shop or taking paying clients right away. Most good readers start by reading for themselves until it feels natural, then read for friends, and eventually feel ready for questions from strangers. This guide lays out four stages and what to practice in each.

Stage 1: read for yourself until it feels natural

  • Read a single card and a 3-card spread without looking up every meaning.
  • Keep a journal of every reading, and come back later to compare it with what actually happened.
  • Practice writing readings for the AI teacher to review, until your scores are consistent.

Stage 2: read for a close friend

  1. Ask what your friend wants to know and help them sharpen the question.
  2. Say up front that the cards are a way to look at things, not a verdict.
  3. Describe what you see in the images, then ask whether it matches how they feel.
  4. End with advice they can act on, and ask how it landed.

Stage 3: follow-up questions and emotional querents

The hard part of reading for others is not memorizing meanings. It is handling follow-ups such as "will he come back?" or "can you tell me again that it will definitely get better?" A reader has to answer gently but honestly, and never promise what the cards cannot give.

  • Practice in customer mode: a simulated customer walks into your shop, asks about their own situation, then asks one or two follow-ups. At the end you get the customer's satisfaction and the teacher's review. Each customer uses 1 practice allowance.
  • If you meet a question and have no idea how to start, have the fortune teller show you how to read it. This costs 1 paw, earns no score and no XP.
  • Read the level 5 lesson on ethics and caring for the person asking before you take on heavy questions.

Answering a follow-up honestly

Question: Do the cards say my ex will come back? Please just tell me he will.

Cards: Eight of Cups, position Answer to the question

Sample answer: Eight of Cups shows a figure walking away from eight cups on a moonlit night. This card does not say he is coming back. It is about walking away from something that no longer fills you. I cannot speak for his heart, but the card does raise a question: what do you want from this relationship now, and if he does not return, how will you take care of yourself?

It declines to promise, gently, and brings the person back to what they can do.

Stage 4: read for strangers

  • State your limits clearly: no diagnosing illness, no predicting legal cases, no lottery numbers or stock picks.
  • Keep what people tell you confidential.
  • If the person shows signs of self-harm, stop the reading, stay with them and point them to a local crisis line.
  • Do not frighten people, do not sell "fix your luck" rituals, and state your price clearly before you start if you take payment.

Tip: If you are already good, you do not have to start at the first step. Practice mode has a skip-ahead exam to measure which level you are at now.

Summary

  1. Read for yourself, then for a friend, then take follow-ups, then read for strangers.
  2. The hard part is caring for the person, not memorizing meanings.
  3. Hold to the ethics: be honest, do not frighten, do not promise, and know when to refer someone on.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a certificate to be a tarot reader?
There is no required certificate. What people look for is knowledge, honesty and care for how they feel, and all of those can be practiced.
How long should I practice before reading for others?
It varies. You can start reading for a close friend once 3-card readings for yourself feel comfortable, then move up from there.
How is customer mode different from practice readings?
Practice readings are exercises you submit for the teacher to review. Customer mode is like running a real shop: the simulated customer asks follow-ups and responds in character, and at the end you get both the customer's satisfaction and the review.
How many reader ranks are there?
Six, from The Fool the traveler to The Sun the master. Your plan sets how high you can climb, and the XP you have earned is never lost.
