Lv5 · Ethics and caring for the querent

Read cases where the querent is emotional, answer follow-up questions, and know the limits around health, law and money.

8 min read

By the end you'll

  • Look after the querent's feelings before reading the cards
  • Answer follow-up questions honestly
  • Know your limits on health, law, money and safety

Level 5 is a real case: the querent is carrying something heavy and has a follow-up question. You use the 10-card Celtic Cross or the 13-card Year Ahead spread. Covering every card matters less than taking care of the person in front of you.

The order of your answer

  1. Acknowledge the feelings first, e.g. "Being laid off after 15 years is a very hard thing"
  2. Sum up the whole spread in one paragraph
  3. Go into detail on the positions that matter for the question; you don't need to explain every card equally
  4. Answer the follow-up honestly. If the cards can't answer it, say so plainly
  5. Close with what the querent can control, and some encouragement

A layoff case (three key positions)

Question: How should I start over? (Follow-up: if I use my severance pay to open a coffee shop, will it survive?)

Cards: Five of Pentacles, position Present situation; Eight of Swords, position Challenge; Three of Pentacles, position Outcome

Sample answer: Being laid off after so many years is hard, and feeling ashamed or afraid is very normal. The Five of Pentacles reflects a time of feeling short of money and alone. But the Eight of Swords says what holds you back most is the thought that "nobody will hire me", and that trap is looser than it feels. The outcome, the Three of Pentacles, is about using your skills and working with others again. As for the coffee shop, the cards can't guarantee a business will survive. Your severance is an important sum for your family. Write a business plan and talk to someone experienced first, or try starting small while you keep looking for work.

Start with feelings, answer the follow-up without a definite prediction, and offer options that lower the risk.

Weaker answer: The coffee shop will definitely make it. The cards are great, go for it.

Stronger answer: The cards can't guarantee a business will survive. Make a plan and start small first.

A reading that pushes the querent to risk their last savings is an irresponsible reading.

Lines you must not cross

  • Health: don't predict symptoms or treatment results. Suggest seeing a doctor
  • Law and money: don't give definite answers. Refer to a professional
  • Other people's decisions: you can read tendencies, but they are free to choose
  • If the querent shows signs of wanting to harm themselves: stop the reading, offer support, and encourage them to contact a local crisis line or emergency services right away; they don't have to go through it alone

Summary

  1. Feelings first, cards second
  2. Answer follow-ups honestly
  3. Know your limits and refer to professionals
