By the end you'll
- Know which suits and Major Arcana cards carry extra weight in love readings
- Read the "other person" cards as tendencies, not as mind-reading
- Give love timing with conditions attached, and know which lines not to cross
Love is the question readers hear most often, and the one they get wrong most easily. The querent usually wants to know what someone else is thinking, and that person is not in the room. A professional reader therefore reads the relationship mainly from the querent's side and treats the other person's cards as tendencies that help the querent understand the situation and make better choices.
The four suits in love
- Cups (water): feelings and attachment. This is the main suit for love. When many Cups appear, the situation is driven more by emotion than by reason.
- Wands (fire): attraction, excitement, the early days of courting. The fire burns hot but can die down quickly unless Cups or Pentacles are there to support it.
- Swords (air): conversations, misunderstandings, arguments and the decision to break up. When several Swords appear, look at communication before you look at feelings.
- Pentacles (earth): practical stability, such as living together, shared money, marriage and steadiness in daily life.
The elemental dignities from the Golden Dawn's Book T help a lot in love readings. Cards of the same element placed side by side strengthen each other. Fire and water are opposites, so a Wand next to a Cup can describe two people who want each other while their habits or the pace of their lives pull them in different directions.
Cards that deserve extra weight
- The Lovers: a choice that has to match what you value. It doesn't always mean "you've met your soulmate". Ask what the querent is choosing right now.
- Two of Cups: mutual feeling on both sides, the most balanced relationship card in the deck.
- Ten of Cups and Four of Wands: a warm home, a celebration, being introduced to the family.
- The Devil: an attachment that is hard to let go of, jealousy, or a relationship that feels like a trap. Read it with care and pay attention to the querent's safety.
- Three of Swords: pain that has to be accepted before it can heal. It doesn't necessarily point to a third party.
- Death and The Tower: the end of a phase or a sudden change. Sometimes an old pattern ends so a better one can begin. Neither card means the relationship must end.
Reading people in love
A court card in the other person's position describes the way they are acting in this situation. It says nothing about their gender, age or looks. A man can come up as a Queen and a woman as a Knight.
- Page: feelings that are new or still unsure, a message, someone reaching out. The Page of Cups is often a shy way of showing interest.
- Knight: someone who arrives or leaves quickly. The Knight of Cups comes with offers and sweet words; the Knight of Swords can be blunt enough to hurt.
- Queen: someone who looks after you, listens and understands feelings from the inside.
- King: someone who wants to set the direction of the relationship or take responsibility for it. The King of Pentacles is usually ready for commitment and security.
Tip: If a court card lands in the querent's own position, read it first as a side of the querent. Don't jump to the idea that a new person is about to arrive.
Timing in love
- Wands: things that move fast, like a message or a date, within days to a few weeks.
- Swords: things that have to be said or decided, which can happen suddenly, within a few days.
- Cups: feelings that build slowly, over several weeks to a few months.
- Pentacles: long-term commitments such as moving in together or marriage, usually several months to a year or more.
Give timing as a period when this energy is strong, and tie it to what both people need to do: "over the next two or three months, if you talk about your shared goals" rather than "next month they will propose".
The question "How do they feel about me?"
Question: How does the person I'm talking to right now feel about me?
Cards: Three of Cups, position Past; Page of Cups, position Present; Two of Swords, position Future
Sample answer: Past: Three of Cups. This connection started with fun and friendship in the same group. Present: Page of Cups. They are likely to feel good about you in a shy way, and may show it through messages or small gestures more than direct words. Future: Two of Swords. You may both be hesitating over whether to take things further. If each of you waits for the other to make the first move, things could stay stuck here. Try starting a conversation or suggesting time alone together, and notice how they respond. Their own answer will always be clearer than the cards.
Use "likely" for the other person's feelings, and finish with something the querent can do themselves.
Weaker answer: They love you deeply but are afraid to say so. Soon they will definitely confess their feelings.
Stronger answer: The Page of Cups suggests they are likely to have warm feelings but aren't ready to show them openly. If you want to know for sure, make room for the two of you to talk and hear it from them.
The first answer presents the other person's mind as fact and promises something only they can choose. The second gives a tendency and hands the decision back to the querent.
Common mistakes
- Stating the other person's thoughts as fact.
- Promising that an ex will come back, or that the person the querent likes will choose them.
- Declaring there is a third party based on one card, leaving the querent suspicious or ready to accuse someone.
- Reading only feelings and forgetting communication (Swords) and real-life readiness (Pentacles).
Boundaries a reader must keep
- The other person is free to choose. The cards show tendencies; they don't bind anyone's heart.
- Don't help plan ways to pressure, track or win over someone who isn't willing.
- If the querent says they are being controlled, threatened or hurt, their safety comes before the question of whether to stay. Point them to a local domestic abuse helpline or social support service.
Summary
- Cups are feelings, Swords are communication, Pentacles are stability, Wands are attraction
- The other person's cards = tendencies, not mind-reading
- Give timing as a period with conditions
- Finish with something the querent can do themselves
